Set Anchordown to use Manual Menus

  • Go to Appearance > Menus.

  • Select the menu from the dropdown and click select. Alternately, create a menu at this stage.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the menu. Check Main Top Navigation located under Display location.

  • Click Save Menu

  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Vanderbilt – Header Options

  • Scroll to the bottom of the section. Under Primary Navigation Menu Source select manual.

  • Click Publish

Set the Anchordown theme to use Auto Menu

  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Vanderbilt – Header Options

  • Set Primary Navigation Menu Source to Auto

Hiding menu items when using Auto Menu

  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Vanderbilt – Header Options

  • Under “If using Auto navigation, hide these page IDs," add the page IDs that should not be displayed in the menu. Separate each ID with a comma.

  • How to find page IDs: Open a new browser window and navigate to the page to be hidden from the Auto Menu. Click Edit. Inspect the URL in the browser bar.
    Example: https://www.vanderbilt.edu/demo-vublog/wp-admin/post.php?post=1824&action=edit

  • The post ID is found after post=. In the above example, the post ID is 1824.

  • Click Publish

Creating Menus

  • Go to Appearance > Menus

  • Click create a new menu

Adding and editing menu items

  • Go to Appearance > Menus

  • Locate pages and posts under the Pages and Posts dropdown headers. Check items to add and click Add to Menu.

  • Use Custom Links to create links to other websites.

  • Editing menu items – Edit menu items by clicking the arrow located in the top right of the menu item.

  • Change the publicly displayed link text via the Navigation label

  • Click Save Menu 

  • Use Custom Links to link outside your WordPress website.

  • The URL is the web address you are linking to and the Link Text will be how the link text displays.

Ordering Menu items

  • Once added, change the order of your menu items, drag and drop them into place. Items indented under a link will be dropdown items.

  • Once you are done editing. Click Save

  • You can also move menu items up or down in the order by clicking the arrow for the menu item and clicking on the move controls there. When you are done click Save Menu.

Dropdown menu items

The dropdown menus in Anchordown need to have a placeholder link in place to function correctly. Items that aren’t nested in a dropdown can be linked normally.

  • To create a placeholder link, click on Custom Links.

  • Under URL enter a hash symbol (#).

  • Enter the Link Text and then click Add to Menu.

  • Note: If you don’t create the placeholder link for the dropdown, that top link will not function properly.

  • No labels
